Combined Approach

One of the most common misconceptions surrounding chiropractic is the belief that chiropractors do not advocate the use of medication or surgery. At Lakewood Ranch Advanced Chiropractic and Physiotherapy nothing could be further from the truth. Our office works with and receives referrals from area medical physicians. We also keep an extensive list of physicians to whom we refer. We believe by providing treatment options including medications when necessary, we can better serve our patients.

Spinal Manipulation/Therapy

The mode of treatment most often used at Lakewood Ranch Advanced Chiropractic and Physiotherapy is spinal manipulation. A wealth of research exists on the effectiveness and safety of appropriately administered spinal manipulation. Therapy modalitites are also administered when pain, spasm and inflammation are present. Exercises are given to virtually ever patient. Activities of daily living are also discussed with each patient, in addition to nutritional issues when appropriate or requested.

DID YOU KNOW?

The spinal column is made up of 24 movable bones called vertebra. Along with the brain and spinal cord, it is an integral part of the nervous system, your body's communication center.

Vertebrae are stacked on top of each other and are separated by pads called discs. Discs act as shock absorbers and provide spacing between the vertebra, and flexibility to the spinal column.

The spinal column houses the spinal cord, which is the body's communication link to the brain. Nerves exit the spinal column through the small openings between the vertebrae called foramina. Every tissue and organ in the body is connected to nerves. They are controlled by nerve impulses that originate in the brain, travel down the spinal cord via nerves to their destination, and then back again to the brain.

Any interference of this message system can cause a disturbance in the normal body functions.

A subluxation occurs when one or more vertebrae are out of natural alignment. This places pressure on the spinal nerve and affects the transmission of nerve impulses. As a result, the function and healing process of vital parts and organs of the body is affected. Back pain, headaches, shoulder, hip, and leg pain, as well as other symptoms are often the result of vertebral subluxation.

Chiropractic care focuses on locating and returning these vertebrae to a more normal position, there by removing pressure off of spinal nerves. This enables the life-giving nerve impulses to travel freely to affected areas and restore health.

Laying the Foundation for Total Health

Chiropractic care is like building a house - certain things have to happen in a particular order in order for everything to stand strong and work correctly. When building a house, if you tried to put up your walls before you had a solid foundation, your walls would be weak and eventually collapse. If you tried to put on your roof before the walls were ready, you would run into the same problem. The same is true for your body. Your body has to go through a particular plan of care in order to repair itself correctly and fully. There are three general phases of chiropractic care:

Phase 1: Relief Care

If you are in pain when you come into our office, the first objective is to help you feel better. Depending on the severity of your problem, it is typical to need care two to three times per week for four to 12 weeks.

Phase 2: Corrective/Restorative Care

During the corrective care phase, muscles and other tissues are allowed to heal more completely, thereby helping prevent injury. It is typical to need care four to eight times per month for six to 24 months, depending on your overall health and the severity of your problem.

Phase 3: Wellness Care

Once your body has fully healed, it is important to come in for periodic adjustments to avoid problems in the future. Usually, this only requires a quick visit to the chiropractor one to four times per month, based on your lifestyle and goals.
